My Portland

Alright, so I have lived near Portland for 18 years and I would like to think I have been in the city a lot. I was thinking about things to blog about, and I figured I would make a list of my favorite places in the city.

Can you think of any places that I should visit? This can be a restaurant, park, etc…

Best Place to Grab Something Sweet:

Saint Cupcake
407 NW 17th Ave [at Flanders]
and
3300 SE Belmont [at 33rd]
I absolutely love their cupcakes. For you vegans out there, they also have dairy-free cupcakes that are to-die-for. Their employees are all really friendly, and their stores are so cute! If you don’t have time to stop into the store, don’t fret! Saint Cupcake ships cupcakes [choose 3, 6, or 12 cupcakes], and they’ll also ‘cater’ your parties! Click here to visit their site and to learn more.

Best Music Venue:

Satyricon
125 Northwest 6th Avenue
I am being ridiculously biased in my choice here. I can’t count  how many times I’ve been to this venue in the past couple years, and I wouldn’t trade any of the shows for anything. This venue holds so many good memories, so I can’t not make it my favorite Portland venue. Sure, the sound might not be the best, but it has character and nice staff.

Best Neighborhood(s)/Areas of Portland:

Pearl District
NW Portland
Hands down my favorite place in Portland. Just go.

Hawthorne District
SE Portland
I have spent a ton of time in Hawthorne due to shows and what not, and it’s definitely one of my favorite places. I love the residences, stores, etc… Go.

Best Park:

Forest Park
NW 29th Ave and Upshur Street to Newberry Road
One word: beautiful. Forest Park covers over 5,100 acres and is one of the largest city-parks in the country. Since it’s so big, there are numerous entrances, so click here to learn some more!

“Tourist” Must-See:

Powell’s Books
1005 W Burnside
It really is as great as everyone says.

Best Shopping:

NW and SE Portland.
There are a ton of unique boutiques all over NW and SE.

I Will Be King Album Release

As you may remember, I did a post back in November about the local band I Will Be King.

Well, their album is now up for download! It’ll be on iTunes in about two weeks, and I highly advise you to buy it once it’s available, but if you want to preview it, click here.

I still find it so odd that I went to high school with these kids.

Memorial Day Weekend Fun

She & Him
Band of Horses

Les Schwab Amphitheater
Bend, OR
May 30th, 2010. Gates at 5, show at 6.
$35 general admission.
Tickets on sale at March 6th.

So excited!

University of Portland Graduate Found Dead in Haiti

University of Portland graduate Molly Hightower was on the 5th floor of the orphanage she was volunteering at through Friends of the Orphans when the earthquake struck. Sadly, she did not survive the quake. She was found in the remaining rubble on Thursday, and her family/friends were notified on Friday morning.

I can’t even begin to comprehend what her family and friends are going through right now, but my heart goes out to them as well as everyone else who has lost a loved one in the earthquake.

Best Movies of 2009

Alright, I admit, I haven’t seen *too* many movies this year, but I think I’ve seen enough to make a “Best Movies of 2009″ list for my blog! [JSYK: I haven't seen any of the huge movies such as 'Up', 'Precious', 'Star Trek', 'Inglorious Bastards', or 'Avatar', so don't freak out that I didn't include them]

Agree? Disagree? Comment!

These are in no specific order.

‘The Hangover’
I think this is probably my favorite comedy, ever. If you haven’t seen it, you really need to. So much better than Superbad in that it’s a bit more than solid “raunchy” comedy, but there is a just enough of that as well. The fact that it takes something so common as a guy’s weekend in Vegas and turns it into a huge fiasco is hilarious. Huge thumbs up to this one.

‘Knowing’
This movie was truly terrifying. I think it played really well on the viewers fear of the unknown, and it did it very well. I know a lot of people are going to disagree with this one, but I really enjoyed it. The end was kind of *meh*, but I think it, in an odd way, worked out really well.

‘Milk’
So, this *technically* came out in 2009, January 30th I believe, so I’m putting it on here. I just watched it this past weekend, and I absolutely loved it. The casting was tremendously well-done, as was the acting. It didn’t shy away from being too “vulgar”, as some people would call it, and I give props to the actors for going all-out for this out. Truly touching and powerful film.

‘Paranormal Activity’
The hype over this movie before it’s wide-release was legitimately insane. I saw it the first day it was shown in the Portland-area and I still freak out at night. It was so simple, but so frightening. It took a place where we feel so safe, our homes and bedrooms, and turned it into a place of nightmares. I think it played with our imagination to the highest degree, and overall succeeded. Although it is fictional, yet was marketed as based on a true story, it has got to be one of the scariest films I have ever watched.

‘Coraline’
Fabulous. I had thought for the longest time that this was a Tim Burton film, but it’s not, but I still loved it. It was entertaining, but still a bit disturbing [from what I've heard, it stays pretty true to the book in that sense]. I tried to watch it in 3-D at home, but it just hurt my head, so who knows if that would’ve added to the movie at all. But, all in all, I really enjoyed the story and animation. Also, I am fairly sure that the town ‘Coraline’ takes place in is based on Ashland, OR, which is pretty cool.

Listen: I Will Be King

Alright, this is semi-weird since I went to school with these guys [they're a year younger], but I can’t deny that they’re pretty awesome.
I Will Be King hails from Portland, OR and consists of Josiah Marshall [vocals and bass], Brennan Hickok [guitar], and Julien Ehrlich [drums].
They currently have two songs on their Myspace, so be sure to check those out. They also have a show tomorrow [November 21st] at Hawthorne Theater in Portland, OR. Show starts at 7 PM and tickets $10 at the door. You can also contact the band and get tickets through them for $9. I, personally, would buy through the band since it looks good when they can draw a crowd themselves.
Anyways, I really dig their sound, and their group shot is pretty awesome as well.

Review: Glamour Kills Tour

This is long overdue, but I’ve been pretty busy.

Anyways, general info:
Date: November 13th, 2009.
Location: Roseland Theater in Portland, OR.
Line-up: All Time Low, We The Kings, Hey Monday and The Friday Night Boys.

I got to the venue while Hey Monday was playing, so I can’t vouch for The Friday Night Boys’ performance that night. But, I can say that I saw them earlier this year and wasn’t impressed at all. I don’t know if it was an off night or not, but I was disappointed.

Hey Monday, for lack of better word, rocked it. I’ve seen them once before back in April, but I don’t think I saw them at their best since the WaMu Theater is quite massive. Anyways, Cassadee’s voice seems to have improved a lot. I was really impressed. The whole band had the crowd so pumped and into the set, you can really tell they absolutely love performing. I know a lot of people don’t like Hey Monday because Cassadee is “trying to be like Hayley [from Paramore]“, but I honestly don’t see it. They have such a stage presence, and they really are awesome performers. Yeah, Cassadee and Hayley are both female vocalists, but come on.

We The Kings. Oh, they never get old. I think I’ve seen them a good 6 times now, and I am nothing short of impressed each time I see them live. Granted, it’s getting a bit old since they only have one album to play songs from, but they have so much energy. I’m fairly sure Travis was ill, but he didn’t let it slow him down at all. They started off the set with their new song entitled “Heaven Can Wait”, and they rocked it. They also did a cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” and the crowd ate it up. They performed it really well. For seeing them so much, it’s a lot to say that I would still see them again. I think the biggest reason I keep seeing them is because I love the things that come out of Hunter and Travis’ mouths on stage, so funny.

All Time Low, what to say. This was the 4th time I have seen All Time Low, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd more into their set. Alex was ridiculously sick, and Jack had warned the crowd that their set would have to be cut a little short due to that. As far as I can remember, Alex did about 4 songs with the band before leaving stage to go get sick. Cassadee from Hey Monday and Andrew from The Friday Night Boys came on to fill in for vocals on about 3 more songs. Jack brought 2 people from the crowd to sing along to their cover of Blink-182′s ‘Dammit’. I absolutely love seeing them cover Blink, because you can tell how much they have influenced and inspired them. By the end of their set, I’m fairly sure all the bands were on the stage, along with a crazed dancer man, singing along to ‘Dear Maria’, and I absolutely loved it.

Overall, it was an amazing show. If I only went to see All Time Low, I’d feel a little gipped, but you can’t expect a super-sick vocalist to bust out a whole set.

Videos:
I didn’t take any of these, just so you know.
